Question by NanaNibs: Is there any way that you can tell if a dog is in pain?
Unfortunately, they can never tell us how exactly they are feeling.
My golden retriever is 11 1/2 years old. She has a few lumps on her and has slowed down quite a bit. The vet told us we shouldn't be concerned about the lumps. But we really don't know how much longer she will be with us. I just wanted to make sure she is not in any pain. I wish pets could just speak to us!

Well they will show signs by crying, helping, shaking, etc. Also, if for example their paw is hurt, they will hold it up or keep it limp. There are warning signs when dogs are in pain and the dog will find a way to let you know

Question by Luvwriterrz: What do i do with a dog in pain???
My dog is in a lot of pain. In about 30 minutes, he's will be getting a check-up @ the vet. What should i do to help comfort him @ the vet and @ home? He's shaking, wimpering, yelping, and refuses to eat and drink. He's cries if you barely tough him. PLEASE DON"T SCREAM AT ME and TELL ME TO TAKE HIM TO THE VET. I am doing that. If you know ways to help reduce pain and or know the problem, please post. I would take him to the vet right now if i could, but they don't open until 10:00 a.m., and he actually happens to be their first animal for today.
i made a mistake in my question. Tough should be touch. -sorry for the mistake.
I am only 14 and i am not sure what to do. My mom is helping me out with this and she'll be the one driving to him. We live so far out in the city, that the emergency vet is about an hours drive. The nearest vet, is ten minutes.
I have some good/bad news. The good news is that they believe that it is just an upset stomach, probably caused by from getting into the garbage the other night. The bad news is that they are not sure if that is the case, so my parents and i will have to monitor him. Thank you all who have helped me! Thank you for not screaming "TAKE IT TO THE VET RIGHT NOW!!!!!!!" Or something along those lines.
I am starting to become scared. I can guarantee you that cody does not have stomcach problems like the vet said, the vet told us to give my dog some baby liquid meds that help reduce pain. This morning he did not wimper when he walked, now he is. The vet is saying "leave him alone", "no need to take him the the emergency vet". But i know something is wrong. The baby meds that he advised are working right now though. IDK, if i am being paraniod or if this IS SERIOUS!!!!!!! PLEASE HELP!!!

Question by GP: Can a dog be in pain, but not show signs of it?
My dog is very old and he seems fine, but considering he is nearing 17, I'm wondering if maybe he's going through any sort of pain, but just not showing it? The vet says he is fine, but we've not done any deeper, more thorough testing.

Question by margaret m: friends dog in pain need help?
My friends beagle is 5yrs. She is healthy until 2 weeks ago. The dog started with some mild pain in back end, we took her to vet and had lymes test and bloodwork, all is fine, she got worse stopped eating and drinking, went back to vet and had xrays taken all looks good, put her on steriods and she was better for 3 days, now she cries to get up, eat and when you touch her anywhere. What could be going on? The vet is stumped and the bills are getting really expensive and getting harder to keep going back, any suggestion on where to look next would be greatly appreciated
Katie Jane: no kidding bills come with dogs, and yes it is a friends dog, I am not some stupid teenager, I am 36 and paying for my friends dog to be seen by vet, she is going thru an ugly divorce and has 3 kids, one of which is blind, so money is an object in the real world with real life things happening, and we have had 4 different vets at office all give opinions and the only answer is to spend a grand on full body scan and cat scan of brain, really hoping some one may have dealt with something similar to point us in the right direction
her spine all looks normal and the pushed and checked between each vertabre and she was fine for all of that, just progressivly getting worse

Get another vet's opinion. For the bills to keep piling up and no answer as to what is wrong with the dog is crazy to me.

Question by : dog illnesses, pain? please help if you can?
Yesterday my maltese poodle, Sugar, was acting rather strange, my sister told me that when she went downstairs my dog was squeeling loudly and she looked as though she was in quite a bit of pain. It appeared to be an ant-bite (our dogs have been bitten by ants before and acted very similar to how she was acting), though as the morning went on she seemed to have improved a lot.

When I called her through to the lounge to sit with me while I watched TV, she happily came with me, though she was incredibly hesitant to jump up on the couch, eventually I picked her up to which she protested to, again, howling. I checked her out and couldn't see anything wrong, thinking perhaps it was still an ant-bite (this wasn't long after my sister had mentioned her acting strange) and seeing as she'd stopped crying I left her to sleep on my lap.
When the time came to get up, she wouldn't jump off the couch, I lifted her down, but she wouldn't walk, I had to carry her through to a blanket, where she's still laying.

She won't move anywhere is very tense, sometimes shaky, she won't eat and I haven't observed her drinking any water, though she seems to have got up in the middle of the night and urinated. We've just discovered that if you touch a certain area on her back she yelps.

The vet is fully booked today, the nearest appointment I can get is in two days time, unless it's classed as an emergency, which I'm not sure if something like this is or not.

Any help or suggestions/advice would be incredibly appreciated.

I would classify this as an emergency, considering the fact that she's not eating and you haven't seen her drink any water.
In the amount of time it takes for you to schedule a vet appointment, she could get worse. Good luck, I hope your dog gets better.

Putting a dog down, if they dont show pain.?

Remember that should consult with your vet before treating your dog with any new products.

Question by Paris: Putting a dog down, if they dont show pain.?
My dog was recently put down. He as 9 years old. The vet told us that he had an anal disease and that he was bleeding from his bum and that it was very painful. I didnt see any pain he exhibited, he seemed the way he always was. He was goofy and weird. We had to put this medicine in his bum to make him better, if no improvment, they said they might have to put him down. The week passed and he is gone. Do dogs show pain because he didnt act different. I noticed though that he had like his skin was redder and sum blood spots.
Why dont dogs show the pain they are in since the vet said it was very painful and do you think it was right to put him down if he didnt show some signs of pain. I didnt want this, i would have let him live.

hmm thats a tough. I would always trust what the vet says, but then again he wasn't at home with the dog, he could have misjudged the pain he was feeling.
