Pain medication safe for old dogs?

Always keep in mind that should consult with your vet before giving any treatments your dog with any new products.

Question by yvette H: Pain medication safe for old dogs?
I've been reading that pain meds are not safe, that they damge the liver and kidneys if the dog has weaknesses in those areas. My dog is 16 so yes, he has issues, I heard it can cause immediate kidney failure. Has anyone here had on old dog on pain meds that were safe?

I know dozens of dogs that take Rimadyl, however, they need to have blood monitoring tests to check for the things you mentioned. There is NO drug (not even vitamins) that are 100% safe for every animal to take. A good vet will recommend testing once an animal is on a medication.

Question by loopfantastic: can you give horse joint supplements and pain meds to a dog?
wanted to give my old dogs joint supplements and pain meds...cant afford the 5 pills for $ 80 the vet wants to give so i was wondering if i could use low doses of my horses joint supps and some beute pain meds

Best answer:

Answer by Ponygirl
Most joint supplements can be given to the dog, but not the bute--that will kill him, so please don't do that.

The joint supplement should have a dosing chart on the package or online. Springtime Feeds and Cosequin both have doggie doses on the packaging. It comes to about a pinch of those. Other brands that have more filler may need a different amount.

Dog pain meds from Walmart?

Remember that should discuss with your veterinarian before giving any treatments your dog with any new products.

Question by Alena's Mommy 7-1-11: Dog pain meds from Walmart?
My dogs were fixed today and I think that they are hurting. The vet said that they should not need pain meds and he doesn't prescribe them to younger dogs. I really want to get them something to make them more comfortable. All we have is a walmart. Do they sell pain meds for dogs at walmart? She is like 6 pounds and he is 12 pounds.
People like most of these answerers make me want to cut you open and not give you any pain medications.

No they don't. Only your vet can prescribe pain meds or any meds otc or prescribed. Things like aspirin only thin the blood & cause more bleeding so go by your vet instructions.

Sorry if hearing the truth upsets you but answers are looking out for the dogs welfare & not giving wrong advice. Don't ask if you can't handle folks not agreeing with you.

Dog has pain in neck?

Remember that should consult with your vet before treating your animal with any new products.

Question by dogman: Dog has pain in neck?
My min pin got stepped on around his neck area. A few days later he was in alot of pain. Took him to the vet they put him on pain meds for two weeks. Pain meds made him sick. Took him back and got x-rays. Vet said there was 3 possible spots that could be a ruptured disk. He said surgery would cost 1500-2500 each. They would have to check each area till they found the spot that may be hurt. So I told him I can't pay close to 8000 dollars for this. He put him on steroids and different pain meds. Dog got better after 3 days. Like new again. A few days after steriods were gone the dog went back to being in pain again. Went back to vet got same meds again dog all better till I ran out. I would rather see the dog put to sleep rather than suffer this pain.

Answer by sciontcmas
that is alot of money, obviously the steroids helped, so if they dont cost too much, perhaps the Vet will continue to give you those, or you can muster up the money,, sad really, im sorry.

Vets regularly suggest using baby aspirins for pain/fever. If that doesn't help enough, there are other pain relievers made for dogs that you can get from your vet.

Question by chi_girl2002: I'm going to be taking my dog in to get spayed does she need pain med?
I made and appointment to get my dog spayed through pur ocal spca, I’ve been doing research and some people say their dog needed pain meds and the vet provide this for them but others don’t. How do I know will they give it to me or should I ask?
I’ve also read some places keep them overnight and some don’t I will be picking her up the same day. I just want to know why some keep them over night and others don’t.

I’m a little worried is there anything that I will need that I should keep at hand, or buy so I can be prepared when the time gets here, when I pick her up will I need a crate to lace her in or can she sit on our laps? Sorry if this is ignorant, but she is my first dog, and I’m pretty uneducated when it comes to them I’m learning as I go any help is greatly appreciated.

Need to know if your spayed dog got pain meds?

Remember that should discuss with your vet before treating your dog with any new products.

Question by Irish: Need to know if your spayed dog got pain meds?
I am not an experienced dog owner, and my female chi is going to be spayed next week. I would like to know from anyone who had their female dog spayed if they have pain meds or not after the operation, and the comments regarding if they think it was necessary or not. I would like as much help making this decision because at work the few dog owners are pretty split on this. One said yes, dogs feel the pain acutely but won't show you, another said no, dogs don't feel pain the way humans do and I will waste money on meds. It's $ 50 for 5 days, and I am willing to spend that if she's going to be in pain.

What side effects to the pain meds for dog have?

As in the pills you give your dog after she's been spayed.

Answer by wolfeblayde
They may make the dog sleepy. There is also a possibility that the dog may have an upset stomach or loose bowels. In extreme cases, the dog may have an allergic reaction which manifests as muzzle rubbing, scratching, and difficulty breathing; however this is very rare.

Usually, those are the only side effects of a prescribed pain med, but if there is any bleeding, bloating, or signs of allergic reaction, take the dog to the vet right away.

Take him to the vet.
Otherwise, the pain meds that work on humans also work on dogs. Icy/hot will provide temporary relief, tylenol/advil will also work.
