Question by : What is a safe human pain medication for a dog? I just ran out of her pain meds.?
I checked the internet and found that 3 baby asprin would be safe if crushed and given with food. Has anyone given their dog baby asprin? Any other ideas? She's very old, 14 and around 50 pounds.

I've been reading that pain meds are not safe, that they damge the liver and kidneys if the dog has weaknesses in those areas. My dog is 16 so yes, he has issues, I heard it can cause immediate kidney failure. Has anyone here had on old dog on pain meds that were safe?

I know dozens of dogs that take Rimadyl, however, they need to have blood monitoring tests to check for the things you mentioned. There is NO drug (not even vitamins) that are 100% safe for every animal to take. A good vet will recommend testing once an animal is on a medication.

My dog is on pain meds after his neuter, and, I have heard a good argument:

taking the pain medication makes them feel like they are fine and nothing is wrong and they are more likely to run around and act normal and end up hurting themselves/opening the incision.

but wouldn't it be inhumane to let them be in pain?

no, my dog was only given anesthesia during the surgery and he was given no pain meds for afterwards, and thats how most vets do it.

He is on eye drops for this eye problem hes had for about a week now.
All I could really afford were the eye drops...and to get him checked.

Is there anything I can give him for the pain in his eye?

I normally have the money to take care of my dog. But right now,times are tough..and I am doing the best I can for him. Which is more then what a lot of people in my situation can afford.

I am putting his needs before mine..
Just because I can't afford pain medication this one time in my dogs whole 7 years of being with me...does not mean I cant take care of my dog.

So don't sit there and critisize me for it.

About 3 weeks ago my dog was in a considerable amount of pain; she was shaking and sleeping all day, but the pain could not be localized. I took her to the vet and he did a series of x-rays and blood tests but everything came back fine. He put her on pain medication and after about 4 days she was back to normal.

Yesterday, however, I took her for an hour walk and today she is in pain again (not as bad as before, however). It seems as though her bum/tail region is hurting her because when I picked her up I grazed that area and she yelped. If I poke the area, however, she won't even respond. I took her to the vet again today and he gave her more pain medication.

She is a 5 year old beagle and she is eating, drinking, and relieving herself just fine...any ideas as to what might be wrong.
Obviously I'm aware that I should take her to the vet....I've taken her twice and spent a thousand dollars to date. I'm not here to get a 'take her to the vet' response...I'm asking for suggestions as to what people with experience in this area might think...
Putting her to sleep is not an option...

I'm not a vet so I don't really know. I would advise for you to take her to the vet again and check out whats wrong. If your vet can't figure out what's wrong with her then take her to another vet if possible.
