Question by : what should i do besides going to the vet, since my dog is in pain after 3 shots?
my 2year old maltese with PDA got 3 shots yesterday...rabies,bordetella and distemper...what should i do to lessen his pain...he ate and drank a little and at times he shivers...is this something to be worried about?

Best answer:

Answer by Cory B
These are common symptoms, if he is eating and drinking, he should be fine. You can give him asprin, 5mg per pound the dog weighs is the max to give him, with a maltese I would go even less.

Question by irishcelticeyes@sbcglobal.net: what can i give my dog for pain after her was spay?
I had my 10 month puppy spay today. She came home about 7 hours after the operation. The vet was closing for the day and they just handed her over without any pain meds or instructions on how to care for her. She looks like 'shit'. I carry her outside to pee and she is now laying on a soft blanket on my sofa. Is there any over the counter pain meds I may give her...like baby aspirin?

Question by : Would an ice pack or heating pad help ease some pain for my dog after a spay operation?
We took our pup in today and got her fixed. She seems like shes ok but I can tell that the drugs are wearing off. She seems like shes hurting a little bit and I was just wondering if a heating pad or cold pack would help comfort her.

No take home pain meds? Maybe you could ask the vet for some tomorrow?

You could try either one, but I would be SUPER careful of anything cold perspiring and getting the stitches wet.

ADD- Just thought of something. My vet keeps animals for 2 nights after a spay and she keeps heating pads in their cages, unter a blanket so they are not directly on the heating pad. So maybe it would actually help. I think it's more for warmth then pain management, but it can't hurt to try it. :)

ADD - Rescue Member - I know. When I started rescuing after going to her with mom's cats, etc, it was weird to get used to the dogs coming home the same day. I don't know.
I will ask her next time I go there. I might be missing something. Maybe the owners have something else done in addition to the spay, who knows. I'll check into it.

Question by Pretty Ugly: What can I give my dog for pain after her surgery?
My dog had surgery last night to remove a mass between her back leg and abdomen and she was also spayed. She's coming home tonight, and I was wondering what can I give her for pain? I know that if I had this surgery done I would be in pain, and I want to make sure she's comfortable. The vet said she isn't getting anything for pain, only antibiotics for plaque on her teeth that they removed while she was asleep.

What kind of medicine can I give her to make sure she's comfortable, she can't vocalize anything as she was "debarked" before I got her (She used to be a puppy mill dog) so I don't know how to tell if she's in pain. She's already very cuddly, and always needs to be on me, so I wouldn't be able to see a difference if she does it that way.

She's a ten pound miniature schnauzer.
They said they aren't giving her anything for pain already when I called.

Can't I give her like half a childrens tylenol? or baby asprin?
I asked when I went in to get her again, and she brought the vet out, he said that she isn't in THAT much pain, and I said, I don't want her in pain, so I got meds for 4 days for her

Do dogs experience pain after neutering?

Remember that should discuss with your vet before giving any treatments your animal with any new products.

Question by Lynn L: Do dogs experience pain after neutering?
My pup is going in for neutering tomorrow, and I plan on asking all of these questions before his surgery. I was wondering if he will get pain medicine, and if he will have to wear one of those cones on his head. Also, how long will it take to return to normal activity and normal eating. I know I will be awake all night thinking about this, so anything you can tell me would be appreciated. Just wondering what other people's experiences were. My pup is a small breed, about 10 pounds and 7 months old, if that matters.

Yes! Your dog will have pain! Getting your nuts cut off is gunna hurt REALLY BAD!!! But of course your veternarian will give you pain pills to give to your pup everyday. More than likely your pup will be required to wear a cone! yes it looks ridiculous but it's for his own good! Returning to normal activity and normal eating varies from dog to dog. Some dogs will go back to "normal" after only one day, but others it make take a month or so. Pretty much depends on the vet who does the neutering. Weight and age don't make much of a difference when it comes to how your dog feels after he realizes the 2 of the 3 parts that make him a man are GONE! Haha, had to throw in a little joke.

Question by Pookie Poo: Do you think dogs need pain medication after being neutered?
My dog is on pain meds after his neuter, and, I have heard a good argument:

taking the pain medication makes them feel like they are fine and nothing is wrong and they are more likely to run around and act normal and end up hurting themselves/opening the incision.

but wouldn't it be inhumane to let them be in pain?

what do you think?

Best answer:

Answer by qwerty
no, my dog was only given anesthesia during the surgery and he was given no pain meds for afterwards, and thats how most vets do it.
