Question by Lynn L: Do dogs experience pain after neutering?
My pup is going in for neutering tomorrow, and I plan on asking all of these questions before his surgery. I was wondering if he will get pain medicine, and if he will have to wear one of those cones on his head. Also, how long will it take to return to normal activity and normal eating. I know I will be awake all night thinking about this, so anything you can tell me would be appreciated. Just wondering what other people's experiences were. My pup is a small breed, about 10 pounds and 7 months old, if that matters.

Yes! Your dog will have pain! Getting your nuts cut off is gunna hurt REALLY BAD!!! But of course your veternarian will give you pain pills to give to your pup everyday. More than likely your pup will be required to wear a cone! yes it looks ridiculous but it's for his own good! Returning to normal activity and normal eating varies from dog to dog. Some dogs will go back to "normal" after only one day, but others it make take a month or so. Pretty much depends on the vet who does the neutering. Weight and age don't make much of a difference when it comes to how your dog feels after he realizes the 2 of the 3 parts that make him a man are GONE! Haha, had to throw in a little joke.

There's pain; and then there's the pain of having ones gnuts cut out with a knife.
Of course it hurts; it probably hurts like Hell ! ! ! !
Yes, it does hurt them a lot, and they do get pain medication, it makes them pretty drowsy for a little bit. Yes, I think that they do need to where "the cone of shame" on their head. He will get back to normal activity pretty soon. Yeah, I know how the dogs get. I have two dogs, 1 girl and 1 boy, both fixed. Don't worry, he will be okay soon.=) It was definitely the right choice to get your dog neutered as well. Hope I helped!=)
Most likely you will be sent home with pain management medications. As far as a cone goes this depends on if your dog tries to chew or lick the area of surgery. Even if he does have to wear the cone because he won't leave it alone, most vets will allow you to take the cone off when your home as long as you can keep a very close eye on him. As far as activity,, depending on how your dog recovers from anesthesia they may or may not be able to go home the same day. (rarely do they stay over night with neuters.) If he goes home the same day expect them to be more lethargic then normal because of the anesthesia, though i have seen dogs bouncing in their cages 3 hours after surgery. Usually the animal is not sent home on any dietary restrictions after surgery. You may be told to keep him quiet for the next few days to give him a chance to heal up. No baths for 10-14 days.
Yes they do have pain...how much depends on each dog. I got my little puppy fixed last month...well she's 2 years old but she's little. She had a difficult time walking and jumping. She wimpered a lot when she had to go up or down the stairs but that is expected after surgery. After 2 or 3 days she was doing a lot better. She still couldn't jump out of our truck very well but after a day or 2 more she was back to herself! She did not have to wear a cone because she didn't lick it too much so that was good! As for her eating...she didn't eat anything the following day but the 2nd day she was ate some food and it got better with each day. My friend's dog got spayed and it got an infection so make sure to watch for that! My vet asked if i wanted a pain killer shot...which lasted 7 days so i think that really helped if you get that option. Good luck to your little guy
